How it works
What the result is showing you
These sections explain what the calculator measures, which assumptions matter most, and where the number can be misleading.
Adding tax versus removing tax
Adding tax multiplies the price by one plus the rate. Removing tax does the reverse: it divides a tax-included total by one plus the rate to recover the original pre-tax price, which is useful for expense reports and reconciling receipts.
Rates vary a lot by location
Combined state and local sales tax rates differ widely and some items are exempt. Enter the rate that applies where the purchase happens rather than assuming a single national number.
Sales tax is separate from income tax
Sales tax is charged at the point of purchase on goods and some services. It is unrelated to the income tax taken from your paycheck, even though both reduce what your money ultimately buys.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the questions people ask most about this calculator.
How do I calculate the pre-tax price from a total?
Divide the tax-included total by one plus the tax rate. For example, a $107.25 total at 7.25% divided by 1.0725 gives a $100 pre-tax price. Switch this calculator to remove-tax mode to do it automatically.
Why is sales tax different where I shop?
Sales tax combines state, county, and city rates, which vary by location, and some categories like groceries may be taxed differently or exempt. Always use the local combined rate.
